Sri Lanka stupas' Architecture and History After the introduction of Buddhism to ancient Sri Lanka by the Emperor Dharmasoka in the third century CE, Buddhist people in the Lakwas began to make Buddha's statues and make stupas. It is a monument built for the Buddha. Stupa, Dagoba, Chetiya, Vehera, and Seya are various names. The sacred tree known as Chetia was found in pre-Buddhist Indian and Ceylon society. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ චෛත්‍යය නිර්මාණය හා ඉතිහාසය ක්‍රිස්තු වර්ෂ තුනුන්වන සියවසේදී ධර්මාශෝක අධිරාජයා විසින් පුරාණ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට බුදුදහම හඳුන්වා දීමෙන් පසු ලක්වාසී බෞද්ධ ජනතාව බුදුන් වහන්සේගේ ශාරීරික ධාතු තැන්පත් කොට ස්ථූප සෑදීම ආරම්භ කළේය. බුදුන් වහන්සේ වෙනුවෙන් ඉදිකරන ලද විශිෂ්ටතම ස්මාරකය විය.ස්තූපය ,දාගැබ් ,චේතිය ,වෙහෙර, සෑය යන විවිධ නම් වලින් හැඳින්වෙයි.  චේතිය යනුවෙන් හඳුන්වනු ලැබූ පූජනීය වෘක්ෂ   ප්‍රාග් බෞද්ධ ඉන්දියානු සහ ලංකා සමාජය තුල තිබී ඇත. පුරාණ සමාජයේ වෘක්ෂ වන්දනාව පැවති කාලයේ පිහිටි බිමෙන්  මාලක නම් වූ වේදිකා මත මේ වෘක්ෂ රෝපණය කර තිබුණි. දෙවනපෑතිස්  රජු ප්‍රථම ස්තූපය  ථූපාරාමය  ඉදිකරන ලද්දේ මෙම මාළක මත බව සඳහන්ය. ශ්‍රී මහා   බෝධීන් වහන්සේගේ රෝපණය කරන ලද්දේ ද මේ   මාලක මතය. ධාතු ගර්භ යන පාලි වචනය දාගැබ් බිඳී ආ අතර පාලි  විහාර වාසය කරන අර්ථයෙන් වෙහෙර  යන වචනය ගොඩනැගී ඇත.  බුදුන් වහන්සේගේ ශාරීරික ධාතු තැන්පත් ව ඇති බැවින් මෙහි උන්වහන්සේ වැඩ සිටින බව ගම්‍ය වේ .ලංකාවේ  ඉදි වූ මුල්ම  ස්තූපය ක්‍රිස්තු පූර්ව තුන්වන සියවසේදී වූ බව සඳහන්ය. එහෙත් වංශකථා හා පැරණි සිංහල සාහිත්‍යයේ සඳහන් වන පරිදි
